All things are connected and interdependent. What you do to one link of the circle will affect the
others. If you weaken a link in the circle you weaken the whole. Air is an essential natural resource.
All living things breathe air. A human can go a couple of weeks without food, days without water,
but only minutes without air. Air is an essential natural resource. It is increasingly clear that
clean air must not be taken for granted.
The CTUIR Department of Science and Engineering was established in May 2004 as a department oriented
to using holistic science to better understand the links between human health issues and pollution
impacts to natural resources. The Department provides oversight to the clean up of the Hanford Nuclear
Reservation, incineration of chemical weapons, pollution impacts to the Columbia River, and
environmental impacts of energy projects and policy. The CTUIR Office of Air Quality was established
in 2006.
